Visibility Splay Basics

Visibility Splay.png

Visibility splay drawings are essential tools used by our experienced highways engineers to demonstrate the safety of vehicle access onto highways network. These drawings provide a clear representation of sightlines, ensuring that drivers have adequate visibility when merging onto the road. By utilising visibility splays, we can effectively assess and the safety of your proposed access, giving you peace of mind. Let us help you navigate the complexities of highway safety and obtain your planning permission.

Normal requirements for visibility splay drawings would be to show how far it is possible to see along the highway with an unobstructed view.  For example a 30 mph speed limit would require 43 meters unobstructed view within Manual for Streets specification, and a 60 mph speed limit would require a 215 meter visibility splay in accordance with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB for short).

It is possible to reduce this requirement if you know the actual speeds vehicles travel along the road and we can arrange this for you.  This will increase the lead time of your drawing to approximately 3 weeks and you will also be provided with a report justifying any decrease in visibility splay.

Adverse weather conditions change vehicle travel speeds, therefore it is sometimes possible that surveys will take longer than anticipated - we will keep you informed if this is the case.
