Visibility Splay Ulverston

Visibility Splay for Farm Access near Ulverston

Sometimes, the existing access to a development can become inadequate or unfit for its intended purpose, particularly as the demands of the surrounding environment evolve. Such was the situation encountered at a farm located near Ulverston, Cumbria.

Over time, as the farm expanded its operations and the specifications of vehicles utilised on the property shifted towards larger and more robust models, it became increasingly clear that the original access point was no longer sufficient to accommodate these changes. The owner, recognising the necessity for a more functional and safe entryway, decided to pursue a part retrospective application aimed at creating a new access point that would better serve the farm's needs. To facilitate this new access point, which would connect directly to a road with a speed limit of 60 mph, it was crucial to implement an Automatic Traffic Control (ATC) system. This system plays a vital role in ensuring that the visibility splay achievable at the access point meets the necessary standards for safety, particularly given the high speeds at which vehicles travel on this road.

The visibility splay is defined as the area required for drivers to see oncoming traffic, allowing for safe entry and exit from the farm's access point. Achieving the appropriate visibility splay is not merely a matter of convenience; it is a critical safety measure designed to minimise the risk of accidents and ensure that all road users can navigate the area safely. The regulations governing visibility splays take into account various factors, including the speed of the vehicles on the road, the geometry of the access point, and any potential obstructions that may impede a driver's line of sight. In this case, the implementation of the new access point, coupled with the necessary visibility splay adjustments, aims to not only enhance the operational efficiency of the farm but also to uphold the highest safety standards for both the farm's operations and the general road users.
