Sustainable Travel Audits Holmewood

In order to effectively promote sustainable travel, which is an essential part of any comprehensive travel plan, it is necessary to carry out a thorough audit of the local infrastructure that supports walking, cycling, and the use of public transport. This audit serves as a foundation for understanding the existing conditions and identifying areas for improvement. In this instance, we were collaborating with Magnavale, a forward-thinking company that is genuinely invested in sustainable travel practices and encouraging healthy lifestyles within their organisation. Their commitment to these values is evident in their various initiatives aimed at reducing carbon footprints and enhancing employee well-being.

Magnavale has already implemented a series of proactive measures designed to promote sustainable commuting options among its employees. Among these initiatives is a company-wide lift-sharing scheme, which not only reduces the number of vehicles on the road but also fosters a sense of community among employees. Additionally, as part of the planning permission for their new extension, there was a stipulation that required an audit of the local walking, cycling, and public transport facilities. This requirement underscores the importance of ensuring that the infrastructure supports and encourages sustainable travel methods.

With this in mind, we undertook the task of identifying and highlighting the most likely routes to and from the site that could be utilised for walking and cycling purposes. To ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of our audit, we personally attended the site to conduct a series of detailed checks. These checks included assessing the maintenance, cleanliness, and perceived safety of the routes. After all, if a route is not perceived as safe or is not well-maintained and clean, it is unlikely to be an attractive or viable option for employees to use for their daily commutes. We understood that the aesthetic and functional quality of these routes plays a significant role in influencing commuting choices.

Through the comprehensive audit process, we were able to identify several areas that could be improved quickly and easily to enhance the overall quality of the walking and cycling experience for employees commuting to work. These improvements can be simple issues, such as ensuring that vehicles entering a site don't overrun onto dropped kerbs, therefore causing cracks in the pavement and uneven surfaces, or ensuring that the area is kept free of litter and graffiti. At a higher level, it can highlight damage to infrastructure such as bent railings that need to be replaced. By addressing these issues, we aim to create a safer, more inviting environment that encourages employees to choose sustainable travel options, ultimately contributing to the reduction of the company’s carbon footprint and promoting a healthier lifestyle for all.
