In the context of this specific project, which involved expanding a local, much-loved mosque to accommodate a female prayer hall and extra classroom, the accessibility of the site was crucial to obtaining permission for development. This was particularly important given the mosque's role as a community hub, where increased attendance would naturally lead to greater demand on the local transport infrastructure.

The mosque was sited in a traditional urban residential zone in the mill town of Blackburn, characterised by its narrow roads and limited parking provisions. This urban setting presented unique challenges, as the infrastructure was not designed to handle a significant increase in traffic volume that could result from the expansion. Furthermore, the site was situated on a steep hill, which posed additional barriers to accessibility; for instance, cycling was unlikely to become a popular option for those attending sessions due to the challenging terrain. Thus, it was crucial to investigate the parking at the site in great detail, assessing not only the available spaces but also the potential for implementing effective traffic management strategies. This included imposing regulations on traffic at the site, such as clearing the site exit to enable a one-way system through the property. This system would facilitate safe drop-offs and pick-ups, minimising disruption to the street scene and enhancing the overall safety for pedestrians and drivers alike.

The elders of the mosque were committed to encouraging a healthy lifestyle among their congregation, which further emphasised the need for a thoughtful approach to transportation and accessibility. In response to this commitment, we put forward a comprehensive plan that facilitated car sharing, walking, and multi-modal journeys to heighten awareness and promote sustainable practices. This plan included the development of clear signage to guide attendees towards alternative transport options, as well as potential partnerships with local transportation services to provide shuttle options during peak times. Additionally, community workshops were proposed to educate congregants about the benefits of shared transport and active travel, fostering a culture of sustainability within the mosque community. By addressing these transportation concerns proactively, the mosque could not only enhance its accessibility but also contribute positively to the local environment and community health.
