Sometimes, it is evident that a full transport statement may not be necessary for every project, especially those that involve the construction or conversion of only one or two new buildings.

A prime example of such a scenario can be observed at a site located in Sproat Ghyll, which is situated near the village of Orton in Penrith. In this particular project, the owner of the site expressed a desire to convert one of his existing barns into a new dwelling. Given the nature of the project, it was crucial to ensure that the conversion would not pose any risks to the safety and function of the surrounding highways network.

To achieve this, we undertook a comprehensive Automatic Traffic Count (ATC) survey to gather data on road speeds in the vicinity. This survey provided valuable insights into the traffic patterns and behaviors that would impact the project. Following the collection of this data, we proceeded to create an accurate visibility splay using advanced Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. This step was essential in determining how well drivers could see oncoming traffic when exiting the site, thereby ensuring that sightlines were adequate for safe maneuvering.

Additionally, we employed Autoturn software, a specialised tool used in the analysis of vehicle movements, to demonstrate that the site could accommodate the largest vehicles that would typically access the area, while also providing sufficient parking space for residents and visitors. This aspect of the planning was particularly important due to the narrowness of the roads in the surrounding area, which posed unique challenges for vehicle access and maneuverability. By carefully analysing these factors, we were able to present a compelling case that the proposed dwelling would not adversely affect the local traffic conditions or safety, thereby facilitating a smooth approval process for the project.
