Transport Assessment Rochdale

Transport Assessment and Travel Plan for Industrial, Rochdale

A transport assessment is crucial for most projects as it offers an excellent overview of the local highways infrastructure and the current demand on the road network. This document is a vital tool for evaluating how the proposed development will interact with the surrounding transportation environment, including traffic flow, accessibility, and potential impacts on the local community. In the context of this specific project, which involved building new industrial units on an existing industrial estate, its strategic location near the A58 and A627(M) provided an ideally situated site. This proximity not only facilitates efficient logistics and supply chain management but also reduces transportation costs and delivery times, ensuring that the units are well-positioned for incoming businesses.

A review of road safety, junction surveys, and trip analysis by our transport consultants resulted in a comprehensive and reliable report on the site's suitability for this purpose. The trip analysis was then processed through the TEMPro system, a widely used tool in transport assessments to evaluate the expected traffic generation of a development based on NTEM data. This analysis helps our consultants predict traffic patterns, peak times, and potential congestion issues, ensuring that all factors are considered in the planning process. This thorough examination is essential for mitigating any adverse effects on the existing road network and enhancing overall safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Additionally, we provided a comprehensive travel plan for this facility, meticulously designed to ensure that the developers were taking all necessary measures to promote sustainable travel options for employees. This travel plan encompasses a variety of strategies aimed at reducing the carbon footprint associated with commuting and enhancing the overall accessibility of the facility.

To begin with, the plan includes an assessment of the current transportation infrastructure surrounding the facility. This assessment helps identify existing public transport options, such as bus and train routes, and evaluates their frequency and reliability. By analysing this information, we can suggest improvements or partnerships with local transit authorities to enhance service reliability and coverage, making it easier for employees to utilise these sustainable options.

Furthermore, the travel plan outlines initiatives to encourage carpooling among employees. This includes the establishment of a carshare program that connects individuals who live in proximity and have similar work schedules. By facilitating carshare, we aim to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles on the road, thereby decreasing traffic congestion and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to public transportation and carsharing, the travel plan promotes the use of cycling as a viable commuting option. This involves the installation of secure bike racks and changing facilities within the facility to accommodate employees who choose to cycle to work. We also recommend collaborating with local cycling organizations to organise bike safety workshops and promote cycling events that encourage employees to embrace this healthy and eco-friendly mode of transport.

Moreover, the travel plan includes provisions for remote work arrangements where feasible, recognizing that flexible work schedules can significantly reduce the need for daily commuting. By allowing employees to work from home several days a week, we can further decrease the overall number of trips made to the facility, contributing to a reduction in emissions.

Lastly, the travel plan emphasizes the importance of ongoing education and awareness campaigns to inform employees about the benefits of sustainable travel options. This could involve workshops, informational flyers, and digital resources that highlight not only the environmental benefits but also the potential cost savings associated with using public transport, carsharing, or cycling.

In summary, our travel plan is a multifaceted approach that aims to create a culture of sustainable commuting among employees at the facility. By implementing these strategies, we are committed to ensuring that sustainable travel is not only a viable option but also an attractive and practical choice for all employees, ultimately contributing to a greener future.
